Web Design 101

Getting it right from the start

Houston Web DesignAs we move into an age were we find just about everything on the web using Search Engines such as Google, it makes sense that good website design not only focus on aesthetics but on all aspects of good search engine optimization. Good web design begins with a sound plan on how the site will be indexed by popular search engines. Afterall, a great website needs to be seen to be effective.

Finding the right balance between good website design and SEO can be tricky and largely depends on the type of website you are building. Database driven sites are particularly difficult because many of the internal pages may not be linked using standard HTML linking methods. In other words they are linked dynamically when the page is viewed. This can present problems for indexing robots that want to crawl through the pages in your site. Again, good web design will insure that all pages are accessible using standard HTML linking methods.

When in doubt about your web design, just view your site using Lynx to see what it will look like to a search engine crawler in plain text. If you can't read the text clearly or there are problems connecting all pages to the home page - rethink your web design. As a leading Houston Website Design Company, Wild Web Studios can help you demystify the complexities of good website deign.

Turn Key E-Commerce

Everything you need to start an Internet Business

e-Commerce Web DesignStarting an Internet business and having your website sell products 24/7 is a dream shared by many small businesses. It sounds so easy - find a few drop-ship companies, put a website together and you're on your way - right? Wrong!

Here's a quick check list to get you started on the RIGHT track:

  • You need a good domain name. Something that describes what it is you're selling if possible. Stay away from domain names that use dashes and special or strange spelling - like kool & kewl, etc. Find something short that has a nice ring to it. Try for a .com name as most people type this at the end of the url out of habit. Look at www.GoDaddy.com for more.
  • You will need an E-Commerce website and Web Hosting with proper support. Call us, we can help you choose a package that fits your business. We can also help you with Web Hosting.
  • You will need a Merchant Account and a Payment gateway so you can accept Credit Card payments on your website. Sure, you can create a Paypal account, but be aware that sales (up to 35%) are lost when a buyer has to switch between your site and Paypal. Many do not make the round trip correctly or give up before you make the sell.
  • You will need a SSL Certificate so that your site can display the small LOCKBOX in the browser window. This is critical to insure your website is secure when customers are entering their credit cards.
  • A good Web Designer and Web Developer that understands how to put a good E-Commerce website together and support it -- longterm. Moreover, your website needs to be well ranked on Google and other search engines. If you fail here, you will most likely fail in your business. More than 75% of traffic on search engines is related to product searching.

We are ready to help you with every item above to insure you get started on the right track. At Wild Web, we want to be your partner in business. When you're a success - we are a success!

Web Sites for Mobile Devices

Web Sites for Mobile Devices With the rise of mobile devices like the iPhone and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), the demand for specialized mobile websites grows. However, it is often a difficult challenge to achieve these adaptions as almost all pages have to be rewritten or redesigned. We have perfected methods for converting your existing website into a powerful, simple to use, and fast to download mini-website. More important, mobile visitors do not have to know special prefixes such as m.yoursite.com, instead our approach auto detects the device and displays the appropriate version.

Stay one step ahead of your competitors and let Wild Web develop your mobile website version.

Insight on helpful tips for web design on the iPhone, Part 1

Having a web page that works with mobile devices, i.e. the iPhone, is the key to unlocking the new world of web design. However, getting a web site to work on the iPhone, really isn’t the problem; the true test is getting your page to shine!

Thought is crucial when beginning development. You need to understand how visitors will view your page and how it will be presented on the iPhone display. The best sites take into consideration the type and capabilities of the mobile devices the page will be displayed on. This means that color features, available functions and resolution are critical. Overall, letting the device figure out how the page will be displayed is not good practice.

Insight on helpful tips for web design on the iPhone, Part 2

This is Part 2 of a six part series on web design for mobile devices, such as the iPhone. If you missed the first section on "Insight on helpful tips for web design on the iPhone, Part 1" be sure to read it prior to continuing on with Part 2.

  • Always test your web design on several different phones before publishing your site. You may try using emulators, but viewing and navigating through your site on a phone’s small screen is always best.
  • You can use flash-enabled, wide screen browsers, but be aware that your viewer will be previewing your website on a much smaller screen with limited colors. Therefore, you can be certain that all of your critical information is visible. General Rule: Anything beyond XHTML Basic won’t be useable on some cellular devices.
  • Building a web design just for cell phones and wireless viewers is an option. If you do decide to take this route, be sure to MAKE IT AVAILABLE.
    • Best solution is to place the link at the top of the page.
    • Hide this link from non-cellular devices by implementing the handheld media type.
    • Implement a m. subdomain on your website specifically for mobile users.
    • Implement a auto detect program that will send mobile users to the right version of your site. Our website is a good example of this technique. Mobile visitors need not know subdomains or special web page names to see the mobile version.
By using these guidelines, you can avoid viewers leaving your website due to poor functionality or difficult navigation.

Web Design is different than Print Design

Web Design is different than Print DesignIn this day and age of the Web anyone designing Websites who doesn't understand the differences between print design and Web design is completely out of touch. There is no question that Web pages are not print pages, and to try to force these two design concepts together is misusing the advantages offered by the Web. The Web is interactive and animated, not static like print. Understanding how to use this new medium to its fullest is the difference between good and bad Web Design.

Good Web design takes lots of planning and patience to produce a result that is pleasing, powerful and informative. The Web is an information tool and thus good Web design must insure the visitor gets informed. Additionally, good Web design takes in account how visitors find this information in the first place. As mentioned in my previous article, not matter how good your website may be, it’s of no value to anyone unless it can be found using common search practices and techniques. That’s why really good Web design starts with search engine optimization (SEO) then build from there.

Like nutrition, it’s not the quantity but how something is absorbed that’s important. You need good Web design to help visitors understand more clearly and absorb what it is you are promoting, selling, etc., and well written information and good graphic design are key elements.
